What it means
Camshaft A Position Signal Output Circuit Open Bank 2: the circuit is open. This relates to engine timing; a fault can cause rough running, a no-start, or timing errors.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The camshaft A position signal output for bank 2 carries timing information from that bank to the control module. The module monitors whether the signal circuit is electrically continuous; it sets P23E9 when it detects an open path, so it cannot reliably receive that output.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in output wiring
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check camshaft position live data for bank 2 to see when the A signal is lost and whether engine timing data is affected.
- Inspect the bank 2 camshaft A signal wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose plugs, or a pin pushed back into the connector.
- With the ignition off, check the signal wire for continuity between the specified connection points, following the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
- Check the connector terminals and harness for a poor or intermittent connection while monitoring continuity, taking care not to damage the terminals.
- If the wiring and connections are intact, test the signal source and module connections using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before considering an internal fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose bank 2 camshaft A signal connector.
- Repair an open or damaged section of the signal wiring.
- Repair or replace a connector with a pushed-back, damaged, or corroded terminal.
- Repair or replace the confirmed faulty signal source or module only after circuit checks identify it.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration because loss of the bank 2 camshaft A signal can cause power loss or stalling. Stop if it stalls, runs very roughly, or becomes difficult to restart.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
