What is the Volkswagen Fox?

Volkswagen used the Fox name for small cars in different markets. In Europe, the Fox was a compact city car and the brand’s entry-level model, with a practical cabin and small footprint. Volkswagen described it as the successor to the Lupo and predecessor to the up!, placing it at the accessible end of its passenger-car range.

The European Fox was designed to make useful space in a small car. Its compact format suited city streets and everyday trips, while the flexible cabin made good use of its size. The earlier US-market Fox was a separate model entry from the later European city car.

Fox generations

The US generation listed here is Generation I, sold from 1987–1993 under code 1B. A later Generation I, code 5Z, was sold in Europe and the UK from 2005–2011. The shared generation label covers two separate market entries.

The European Fox was Volkswagen’s small entry-level hatchback. EU figures list petrol and diesel versions; UK figures list petrol versions.

Engines and fuel consumption

EU figures list 1.2 L to 1.4 L engines, with power from 40 kW (54 PS) to 55 kW (75 PS), and both petrol and diesel fuels. UK figures list 1.2 L to 1.4 L petrol engines, producing 41 kW (55 PS) to 55 kW (75 PS).

The lowest listed UK consumption is 5.9 L/100 km on the NEDC test. US figures for the earlier Fox list a 1.8 L petrol engine; the best combined EPA economy shown is 25 MPG, or 9.4 L/100 km. NEDC and EPA use different test procedures, so these results are best read within their own markets.

Where was the Fox sold?

The Fox appears in EU registration figures for 2010–2013 and UK figures for 2006–2010. The earlier US-market Fox is listed for 1987–1993. The same name was used for different cars in different markets and periods.
