What is Scion?
Scion was a Toyota marque created for the United States, with a focus on younger buyers and small, distinctively styled cars. Its range included hatchbacks, a coupe and a small crossover, often with a choice of personalisation options. Toyota ended the Scion marque in 2016 and moved some models into its own range.
Which Scion models are listed?
The longest-running nameplates were the tC coupe, listed from 2005 to 2016, and the xB, from 2004 to 2015. The xB’s upright, boxy shape made it one of Scion’s most recognisable cars. The smaller xA followed from 2004 to 2006; the xD replaced it in 2008 and remained through 2014.
Scion also offered the iQ, a tiny city car listed from 2011 to 2015, and the FR-S sports coupe, listed from 2013 to 2016. In the marque’s final year, the range included the iA small saloon and iM hatchback, both listed for 2016.
How did the range develop?
Scion began with compact cars aimed at urban drivers, then broadened its appeal with the tC coupe and the more overtly sporty FR-S. The xA and xD served as small hatchbacks, while the xB offered a roomier, more upright alternative. The iQ later pushed the idea of a city car to an especially compact scale.
By 2016, the iA and iM had joined the line-up as Scion’s final new model names. When Toyota retired the marque that year, the tC, iA and iM were among the models absorbed into the Toyota brand in North America.
Where are Scion’s official figures published?
Scion’s figures on TheCarCodex cover the United States and Canada. The US uses EPA ratings; Canada uses Natural Resources Canada’s 5-cycle ratings. Those results are not directly interchangeable with European WLTP or older NEDC figures, because each procedure tests fuel consumption and emissions differently.
