What is the Renault Clio?

The Clio is Renault’s small hatchback, made for city streets but equally at home on everyday journeys beyond them. It sits among the brand’s best-known small cars, with a compact shape and a cabin designed for daily use. Renault introduced the Clio in 1990 as the successor to the Renault 5, positioning it higher in the range.

Across its generations, the Clio has gained new technology and a wider choice of powertrains. The third generation added an Estate body, the fourth brought touchscreen connectivity, and the fifth introduced Renault’s E-Tech hybrid system. Renault unveiled the sixth generation in 2025.

Clio generations

The generations represented in European, UK and French records are Clio II (1998–2012), Clio III (2005–2014), Clio IV (2012–2020), Clio V (2019–2026) and Clio VI (2025–today). The overlapping dates reflect how generation changes and sales periods differed across markets. Renault describes the third generation as available as an Estate; the fourth introduced its R-Link touchscreen, and the fifth was the first Clio offered with hybrid power.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

Across the markets, Clio versions have used petrol, diesel, hybrid, LPG, plug-in hybrid, natural gas and flex-fuel E85 power. EU figures cover engines from 0.9 to 1.8 litres and power from 48 kW (65 PS) to 162 kW (220 PS). UK figures span 0.9 to 2.0 litres and 49 kW (67 PS) to 100 kW (136 PS); French figures span 1.0 to 1.6 litres and 53 kW (72 PS) to 147 kW (200 PS).

The lowest listed consumption is 3.6 L/100 km under WLTP in EU figures. The UK low is 3.2 L/100 km and the French low is 3.1 L/100 km, both under NEDC. WLTP and NEDC are different test procedures, so these results are not directly comparable.

Where was the Clio sold?

Official figures cover the European Economic Area, the UK and France. EU registrations span 2010–2025, UK VCA figures 2000–2026 and French ADEME figures 2012–2026.
