What is the Jeep Comanche?

The Comanche is a compact pickup from Jeep’s 1980s range. It was based on the XJ Cherokee, adapting that model’s underpinnings into a truck with a separate cargo bed. Jeep offered it in short-bed and long-bed forms, giving it a place in the brand’s pickup line.

Generation and engines

The Comanche had one generation, the MJ, which Jeep dates from 1986 to 1992. US EPA listings cover model years 1986 to 1993.

The US engine range ran from 2.1 to 4.0 litres and included petrol and diesel options. EPA listings cover 68 versions.

How economical is the Jeep Comanche?

The best combined fuel-economy rating listed for the Comanche is 26 MPG under the US EPA procedure. The lowest listed consumption is 9 L/100 km, also on the EPA basis. These are two ways of expressing the US test results.

EPA testing uses a different procedure from European NEDC or WLTP tests and Canada’s 5-cycle procedure, so figures from those markets are not directly equivalent.

Where was the Comanche sold?

The Comanche’s listed market is the United States. As a pickup based on the XJ Cherokee, it joined Jeep’s utility range with a cargo bed and short-bed and long-bed configurations.
