What is Genesis?

Genesis is South Korea’s luxury car brand, launched as a stand-alone marque by Hyundai Motor in 2015. It is part of Hyundai Motor Group, and its range brings together executive saloons, SUVs and electric cars. The brand’s identity is shaped around distinctive design and a focus on comfort and hospitality.

Which Genesis models are in the range?

The G70 is the compact saloon in the line-up, while the G80 and G90 sit higher as larger, more formal four-door cars. The GV70 and GV80 are their SUV counterparts, giving the range a choice of family-friendly body styles. The GV60 is an electric SUV, adding a dedicated battery-electric model to the mix.

The model years span 2017 to 2027. The G80 and G90 are the earliest-running lines in that period, followed by the G70, then the GV80 and GV70. The GV60 appears from 2022. Together, the names show how Genesis developed from a saloon-led range into one that also gives SUVs and electric motoring a clear place.

How has the range developed?

Genesis began with large saloons at the heart of its identity: the G80 and G90 establish the more traditional side of the range, while the later G70 brought that approach to a smaller car. SUVs followed, with the GV80 appearing in 2020 and the GV70 in 2021. The GV60 arrived next as an electric SUV.

Electrification is visible in the GV60’s place in the line-up. Genesis has also offered electric versions of other models in some markets, including the Electrified G80 and Electrified GV70. The broader picture is a range that has expanded from saloons to include several SUV shapes and battery-electric choices.

Where can you find Genesis figures?

TheCarCodex lists Genesis figures across the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Official EU registration figures show a small number for the GV80 in 2020; registration totals describe recorded vehicles, not the full range available to buyers.

Fuel consumption and emissions figures vary by market because the test procedures differ. European figures use WLTP or, for some earlier vehicles, NEDC; US ratings come from the EPA, while Canadian figures use NRCan’s five-cycle method. Those results are useful within their own systems, but direct comparisons between regions need care.
