OBD-II fault code

U356B: Anode Drain Valve

What it means

Generic fault on the anode drain valve — combines circuit and mechanical issues. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The anode drain valve removes liquid water and accumulated inert gases from the fuel-cell anode loop. This code indicates a fault associated with the valve overall, including possible electrical, mechanical, or communication problems that can interfere with draining.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve electrical or mechanical failure
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for drain-valve and network faults.
  2. Check scan-tool communication and available command or status data for the anode drain valve.
  3. Inspect the valve connector, harness, and accessible drain path for damage, loose connections, or signs of obstruction.
  4. Test the valve's power, ground, and control circuits against the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the circuits are sound, use manufacturer-supported tests to confirm whether the valve actuates; check CAN routing if other devices also show no response.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the drain valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a confirmed power, ground, or communication-circuit fault.
  • Clear an identified drain-path obstruction if the manufacturer's service information permits it.
  • Replace the anode drain valve if testing confirms electrical or mechanical failure.
  • Repair a confirmed CAN or gateway fault, or replace a terminating resistor only if it tests out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and stop if fuel-cell warnings, reduced power, or shutdown occur, since the anode loop may not drain properly. Continued operation can impair fuel-cell performance or trigger a shutdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
