OBD-II fault code

U356A: Anode Drain Valve Control Circuit

What it means

Generic electrical fault on the anode drain valve control. The drain valve releases liquid water and inert gases that accumulate in the anode loop.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The anode drain valve releases liquid water and accumulated inert gases from the fuel-cell anode loop. This control-circuit code indicates an electrical fault in the path used to command that valve, which may prevent the loop from draining as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve actuator failed
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for anode drain and network communication faults.
  2. Check available scan-tool data or actuator tests to see whether the anode drain valve receives and responds to commands.
  3. Inspect the drain valve connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Test the valve's power, ground, and control circuit against the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If multiple devices report communication faults, check CAN wiring and gateway routing before replacing the drain valve.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the drain valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a confirmed power, ground, or control-circuit fault.
  • Replace the anode drain valve actuator if its circuit is sound but it does not respond.
  • Repair a confirmed CAN wiring or gateway routing fault.
  • Replace a CAN terminating resistor only if testing confirms it is out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle shows fuel-cell warnings, reduced power, or a shutdown, stop driving when safe and arrange diagnosis; water or inert gas may not be cleared from the anode loop correctly. If no symptoms are present, limit use until the fault is checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
