OBD-II fault code

U3569: Anode Multifunction Valve

What it means

Generic fault on the anode multifunction valve — combines circuit and mechanical issues. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The anode multifunction valve combines hydrogen shut-off, pressure regulation, and recirculation functions for the fuel-cell stack. This code indicates a fault associated with the valve as a whole, which may involve its electrical control, mechanical operation, or communication with its module.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve electrical or mechanical failure
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules to distinguish valve faults from broader communication problems.
  2. Check scan-tool communication with the anode multifunction valve and review any available commanded-versus-reported status.
  3. Inspect the valve connector, harness, and visible valve area for damaged wiring, loose connections, or signs of mechanical obstruction or leakage.
  4. Test the valve's power, ground, and control circuits against the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the circuits are sound, use manufacturer-supported tests to determine whether the valve moves and regulates as commanded; check CAN routing if other modules also fail to communicate.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a confirmed power, ground, or communication-circuit fault.
  • Replace the anode multifunction valve if testing confirms an internal electrical or mechanical failure.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway or CAN network fault.
  • Replace a CAN terminating resistor only when testing confirms it is out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue normal driving if a fuel-cell warning, reduced power, or shutdown appears; this valve is involved in hydrogen shut-off and pressure control. Continued operation with a confirmed valve fault can lead to restricted power or fuel-cell shutdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
