What it means
Generic electrical fault on the control of the anode header drain valve (drains the manifold/header line).
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The anode header drain valve drains the fuel-cell anode header or manifold line. This control-circuit code points to an electrical fault in the valve's command path, which can prevent the header line from being drained as intended.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve actuator failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for anode header drain and network communication faults.
- Check available scan-tool data or actuator tests to see whether the header drain valve receives and responds to commands.
- Inspect the header drain valve connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
- Test the valve's power, ground, and control circuit against the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If multiple modules report communication faults, check the shared CAN network and gateway routing before replacing the valve.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the header drain valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Repair a confirmed power, ground, or control-circuit fault.
- Replace the header drain valve actuator if its circuit is sound but it does not respond.
- Repair a confirmed CAN wiring or gateway routing fault.
- Replace a CAN terminating resistor only if testing confirms it is out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
If fuel-cell warnings, reduced power, or shutdown occur, stop driving when safe and arrange diagnosis because the anode header may not drain correctly. Limit use until the control-circuit fault is checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
