OBD-II fault code

U356D: Anode Header Drain Valve

What it means

Generic fault on the anode header drain valve. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The anode header drain valve removes liquid or accumulated material from the fuel-cell anode header or manifold line. This code indicates a fault associated with that valve, potentially involving its electrical operation, mechanical movement, or communication.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve electrical or mechanical failure
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for header drain valve and network communication faults.
  2. Check whether the scan tool can communicate with the anode header drain valve and review available command or status data.
  3. Inspect the valve connector, harness, and accessible header drain path for damage, loose connections, or obstruction.
  4. Test the valve's power, ground, and control circuits against the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the circuits are sound, use manufacturer-supported tests to verify valve movement; check CAN routing if other network devices also fail to respond.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the header drain valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a confirmed power, ground, or communication-circuit fault.
  • Clear an identified drain-path obstruction if permitted by the manufacturer's service information.
  • Replace the anode header drain valve if testing confirms an electrical or mechanical failure.
  • Repair a confirmed CAN or gateway fault, or replace a terminating resistor only if it tests out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and stop if fuel-cell warnings, reduced power, or shutdown occur, because the anode header may not drain correctly. Continued operation can impair fuel-cell operation or cause a shutdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
