What it means
Generic electrical fault on the anode multifunction valve. This valve combines shut-off, pressure regulation and recirculation control on the hydrogen side.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The anode multifunction valve controls hydrogen shut-off, pressure regulation, and recirculation on the fuel-cell stack's anode side. This control-circuit code indicates an electrical fault in the valve's commanded control path, which can prevent the module from operating the valve as intended.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve actuator failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related valve and network faults before clearing anything.
- Use the scan tool's available tests or live data to check whether the anode multifunction valve responds to commands.
- Inspect the valve connector and harness for loose connections, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
- Check the valve control circuit, power, and ground against the manufacturer's wiring information while monitoring for an open or short.
- If several networked devices have communication faults, check the CAN network and gateway routing before replacing the valve.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the anode multifunction valve connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Repair a confirmed power, ground, or control-circuit fault.
- Replace the valve actuator if the circuit is sound but the valve does not respond to commands.
- Repair a confirmed CAN wiring or gateway routing fault.
- Replace a CAN terminating resistor only if testing shows it is out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
Because this valve manages hydrogen shut-off and pressure control, do not continue driving if the vehicle shows a fuel-cell warning, reduced power, or shutdown; arrange prompt diagnosis. A control fault can cause restricted operation or an unexpected fuel-cell shutdown.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
