OBD-II fault code

U054B: Invalid Data Received From Interior Lighting Control Module A

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from interior lighting control module A. Ambient lighting zone, reading lamp or door courtesy light commands fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Interior lighting control module A reports lighting-zone and lamp commands, including ambient, reading, and door courtesy lighting, over the vehicle network. Receiving modules check those values for plausibility; U054B sets when a receiving module rejects data attributed to lighting module A.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record U054B, related communication codes, and freeze-frame details to identify the reporting module and conditions when the lighting data was rejected.
  2. Use live data to check module A's online status and compare its ambient-zone, reading-lamp, and courtesy-light commands with switch and door activity.
  3. Inspect module A's connectors, power and ground, and network wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage, including wiring disturbed during interior trim work.
  4. Check whether the code appeared after a lighting-module replacement or software update, and verify the module configuration matches the vehicle.
  5. If the wiring and setup are sound, check message integrity and gateway routing using the manufacturer's diagnostic information.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or network wire at interior lighting control module A.
  • Restore a poor power or ground connection to the lighting module.
  • Correct an incompatible module configuration or software mismatch after replacement.
  • Repair or replace module A if its lighting status or commands remain implausible with correct wiring and configuration.
  • Repair gateway routing if testing confirms lighting-module messages are being misrouted.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally safe if the lighting fault is limited to interior lamps, but courtesy or reading lights may not work as expected. Check that essential exterior lights still function, and avoid driving if visibility or required lighting is impaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
