OBD-II fault code

U0549: Invalid Data Received From Remote Accessory Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the remote accessory module (aftermarket / OEM accessory bus controller). Status flags or command values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The remote accessory module sends status and command messages over the vehicle network for connected accessories. Other modules check whether those values make sense before acting on them; U0549 sets when a receiving module rejects implausible data attributed to that accessory module.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record U0549, related communication codes, and freeze-frame details to identify which module reported the invalid data and when it occurred.
  2. Use live data to check whether the remote accessory module is online and whether its reported status or commands are stable and plausible.
  3. Inspect the accessory module, its connectors, power and ground connections, and network wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or recent accessory work.
  4. Check whether the code began after module replacement or software updates, and verify that the installed module configuration is compatible with the vehicle.
  5. If wiring and configuration appear sound, have the network messages and gateway routing checked against the manufacturer's diagnostic information to distinguish a source-module fault from a routing fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or network wire at the remote accessory module.
  • Restore a poor power or ground connection to that module.
  • Correct an incompatible module configuration or software mismatch after replacement.
  • Repair or replace the remote accessory module if its reported data remains implausible with sound wiring and correct configuration.
  • Correct gateway routing or repair the gateway if testing shows that messages are being misrouted.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is usually possible if the vehicle operates normally, but remote accessory functions or systems relying on its messages may be unavailable. If other warnings appear or vehicle functions change, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
