What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from interior lighting control module B. Ambient lighting zone, reading lamp or door courtesy light commands fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
Interior lighting control module B manages the lighting functions assigned to it, such as an ambient-lighting zone, reading lamp, or door courtesy light. A receiving module sets U05C0 when commands or status data from module B fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data to identify which module stored U05C0 and whether related lighting or network codes are present.
- Operate the affected ambient-lighting zone, reading lamp, or door courtesy light and note which function fails or behaves inconsistently.
- Inspect module B’s connectors, power and ground connections, and network wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or signs of water intrusion.
- Use a scan tool to compare module B’s reported lighting commands and status with the switch, door, or lighting inputs that should produce them.
- If module B or the gateway was recently replaced or programmed, verify compatible software and configuration, then investigate network routing if other modules also report invalid data.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or network wire at interior lighting control module B.
- Restore the module’s specified power or ground connection.
- Correct software or configuration incompatibility following module replacement.
- Repair a faulty lighting input or wiring if module B reports commands that do not match the controls.
- Diagnose or replace module B if its data remains implausible after wiring and configuration checks.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive if the lighting fault does not affect visibility or required exterior lights. Check that interior lights are not distracting or draining the battery, and repair any exterior lighting issue before driving in conditions that require those lights.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
