What it means
A control module received data from the Vehicle Dynamics Control Module that it judged invalid or implausible. This code identifies the rejected data, but does not by itself identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The Vehicle Dynamics Control Module uses vehicle motion and wheel data to coordinate stability and related control functions. U0416 sets when a receiving module considers data from this dynamics controller implausible, so stability assistance or other dependent features may be limited.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fault or implausible input at the sending module
- Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
- Module power, ground, or programming issue
Symptoms
- Vehicle dynamics or stability-control warning message
- Related functions may be limited
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and preserve freeze-frame data; note which module rejected the data and whether the Vehicle Dynamics Control Module has its own sensor or communication codes.
- Review live data for vehicle speed, yaw, steering angle, and lateral motion values available from the dynamics system, checking for missing or inconsistent readings.
- Inspect the module's connectors and accessible network wiring, plus related steering-angle and motion-sensor wiring, for damage, poor fit, or corrosion.
- Check the controller's own codes and verify its reported inputs against vehicle conditions, since a faulty sensor input can make transmitted dynamics data implausible.
- If no input or wiring problem is found, test power, ground, and network circuits to the manufacturer's specification and check for applicable module programming.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair a damaged Vehicle Dynamics Control Module connector or network wire.
- Repair the steering-angle or vehicle-motion sensor circuit identified by the controller's data and codes.
- Restore module power or ground if testing shows a poor connection.
- Update or replace the dynamics module only after its inputs and circuits pass checks.
Can I keep driving?
Stability or traction assistance may be reduced, so drive smoothly and avoid high speeds, abrupt turns, and slippery conditions. Stop if the vehicle behaves unpredictably or a brake warning accompanies the code.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
