OBD-II fault code

U0418: Invalid Data Received from Brake System Control Module

What it means

A control module received data from the Brake System Control Module that it judged invalid or implausible. This code does not identify which data was rejected or which brake-related functions are affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The Brake System Control Module manages electronic brake functions and shares brake status with other vehicle systems. U0418 sets when another module judges information from this controller invalid or implausible; which brake-related functions are affected depends on the vehicle and the rejected data.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault or implausible input at the sending module
  2. Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
  3. Module power, ground, or programming issue

Symptoms

  • Brake-system warning message
  • Brake-related electronic functions may be limited
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan every module and save freeze-frame and brake-system codes before clearing them; note which controller stored U0418 and any warning messages present.
  2. Check live brake data for reported pedal position, brake pressure or status, and system availability, looking for values that are absent or inconsistent with pedal operation.
  3. Inspect the Brake System Control Module connector, accessible network wiring, and related brake sensor wiring for looseness, corrosion, fluid contamination, or damage.
  4. Read the brake module's own codes and verify brake fluid level and basic brake operation without driving if there is any concern about stopping performance.
  5. If the inputs and wiring appear sound, test module power, grounds, and network circuits to the manufacturer's specification and check applicable software updates.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or corroded brake module connector or damaged network wiring.
  • Repair the brake pedal or pressure sensor circuit identified by module codes and live data.
  • Restore a faulty module power or ground connection.
  • Update or replace the Brake System Control Module only after its inputs and circuits are verified.

Can I keep driving?

Because electronic brake functions may be limited, stop driving if the brake warning is on, the pedal feels abnormal, or stopping distance changes; arrange recovery if braking is affected. If braking feels normal and no brake warning is present, drive only cautiously to a safe place for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
