What it means
A control module received data from the Park Assist Control Module that it judged invalid or implausible. This code does not identify which data was rejected.
How it works
The Park Assist Control Module processes parking sensor information and reports nearby-obstacle or system status to other modules. U0417 sets when a receiving module rejects that park-assist information as invalid or implausible, potentially making the parking aids unavailable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fault or implausible input at the Park Assist Control Module
- Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
- Module power, ground, or programming issue
Symptoms
- Park assist warning or message
- Park assist functions may be unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and park-assist codes before clearing anything; identify which module recorded the rejected data.
- Check park-assist live data for sensor status and obstacle readings, and note any sensor that is shown as absent or implausible when the area around the vehicle is clear.
- Inspect the parking sensors and their connectors for dirt, ice, impact damage, poor fit, or water entry, and check the Park Assist Control Module connector and accessible network wiring.
- Review the park-assist module's own codes to distinguish a sensor/input problem from a communication problem.
- If visible checks do not reveal the cause, test module power, ground, sensor circuits, and network wiring to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean an obstructed parking sensor and remove ice or debris affecting its readings.
- Secure or repair a loose sensor connector or damaged module network wire.
- Replace a parking sensor or repair its circuit when live data and testing identify the fault.
- Repair module power or ground, or update/replace the module if circuit and sensor tests support it.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive, but do not rely on parking sensors or alerts while maneuvering; check around the vehicle directly and use extra care when reversing. The fault can leave park assist unavailable without affecting basic vehicle control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
