OBD-II fault code

U0414: Invalid Data Received from 4WD Clutch Control Module

What it means

A control module received data from the 4WD Clutch Control Module that it judged invalid or implausible. This code identifies the rejected data, but does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The 4WD Clutch Control Module manages the clutch that couples drive to the additional axle in four-wheel-drive systems and sends its status to other modules. U0414 sets when a receiving module rejects information from that clutch controller as invalid or implausible, which can disable or restrict four-wheel-drive operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault or implausible input at the sending module
  2. Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
  3. Module power, ground, or programming issue

Symptoms

  • Four-wheel-drive warning message
  • Four-wheel-drive functions may be limited
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame and 4WD data before clearing codes; note whether the 4WD Clutch Control Module has its own faults or communication codes.
  2. Check 4WD live data for clutch command, clutch status, and reported operating mode, looking for missing or contradictory values.
  3. Inspect the clutch controller connector and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water entry, or chafing, and check that the 4WD system is not showing a separate mechanical or sensor fault.
  4. Review the sending module's own codes and inputs, including any clutch or driveline signals it uses, to identify a source of implausible reports.
  5. If no input or connector fault is evident, test the module's power, ground, and network circuits to the manufacturer's specification and check for applicable software updates.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the 4WD clutch controller connector or repair damaged network wiring.
  • Repair the clutch-position or driveline input fault identified by the controller's codes and data.
  • Restore a failed power or ground connection to the module.
  • Update or replace the 4WD Clutch Control Module only after its circuits and inputs test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

You may lose four-wheel-drive assistance, so avoid slippery, steep, or loose-surface driving that depends on it. If the vehicle also shows a brake, steering, or stability warning, stop in a safe place and have it assessed before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
