OBD-II fault code

U0412: Invalid Data Received From Battery Energy Control Module A

What it means

A control module received data from Battery Energy Control Module A that it judged invalid or implausible. This code identifies the rejected data, but does not by itself identify the cause.

How it works

Battery Energy Control Module A monitors and reports information about high-voltage battery operation to other vehicle modules. U0412 sets when a receiving module rejects data from battery energy control module A as implausible; it does not by itself identify a failed battery cell or pack.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault or implausible input at Battery Energy Control Module A
  2. Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
  3. Module power, ground, or programming issue

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV warning message
  • Battery or related functions may be limited
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify the receiving module and any battery energy, hybrid/EV, or network codes logged with U0412.
  2. Check the instrument-panel messages and live data for battery status, power limits, or missing values reported by module A.
  3. Inspect accessible low-voltage connectors and network wiring for battery energy control module A for looseness, corrosion, or damage; do not open or disturb the high-voltage battery.
  4. Check the module's low-voltage power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Compare module A battery readings with related module data using a scan tool capable of hybrid or EV diagnostics.
  6. If wiring and power are sound, verify module configuration and software and investigate network communication using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or corroded low-voltage wiring or connector terminals to battery energy control module A.
  • Repair a faulty low-voltage power or ground connection found during testing.
  • Correct module A software or configuration incompatibility.
  • Replace battery energy control module A only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

If a hybrid or EV warning appears, battery power is limited, or the vehicle behaves unpredictably, stop in a safe place and arrange appropriate service. Do not handle high-voltage components; continued driving could leave you without expected drive power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
