OBD-II fault code

U0069: Vehicle Communication Bus E (-) Open

What it means

Bus E low-side line open. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Bus E carries messages between connected modules over positive and negative conductors. U0069 identifies an open in the Bus E negative conductor, so the module detecting the fault may lose reliable communication with other devices on that network.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire broken
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data and communication codes to see which devices on Bus E are missing or reporting faults.
  2. Inspect the Bus E negative-line harness and connectors for breaks, loose pins, corrosion, or damage near recent repairs.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to trace the negative conductor and check continuity through the identified sections with power isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Measure bus termination resistance at the specified points and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification, since an open or faulty termination can affect communication.
  5. If the conductor and termination test correctly, check gateway routing and isolate Bus E modules using the manufacturer's procedure to locate a module or connector interrupting the path.

Common fixes

  • Repair a broken Bus E negative conductor or damaged splice.
  • Clean and secure loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or faulty termination connection identified by testing.
  • Repair or replace a faulty gateway or Bus E module if circuit checks isolate it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if connected systems are unavailable or the vehicle enters limp mode, and do not rely on affected driver-assistance or safety functions. An open Bus E negative line can interrupt communication to multiple modules.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
