OBD-II fault code

P2E39: Battery Charger B Fuse

What it means

Battery charger B reports a fuse condition. HV charging operation may be impaired. The on-board charger negotiates voltage, current and safety with the EVSE; a fault interrupts charging or limits it to AC slow-charge despite a DC fast charger being attached.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Charger B has a fuse-protection circuit that helps the control system identify a fuse fault affecting charger operation. P2E39 sets when the module reports that fuse condition, which may be caused by a blown charger fuse or an internal short; the code does not by itself identify which fuse or prove the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Charger main fuse blown
  2. Internal short circuit

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and charger B live data, then check for related charging-system codes that may help identify when the fuse condition was detected.
  2. With the vehicle made safe according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the identified charger B fuse and its holder for an open fuse, looseness, or heat damage.
  3. Check the charger B wiring and connectors for damage or evidence of a short before installing a replacement fuse.
  4. Test the charger B fuse circuit and look for an internal short using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the fuse circuit and harness are sound, follow the manufacturer's steps to determine whether charger B has an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or heat-damaged fuse-holder connection.
  • Replace a confirmed blown charger B fuse after finding and correcting the cause.
  • Repair wiring shorted in the charger B fuse circuit.
  • Repair or replace charger B if testing confirms an internal short.

Can I keep driving?

Charger B may be unavailable, so charging can be interrupted or fail and your usable range may be limited. Do not repeatedly replace a blown fuse or handle high-voltage components; stop charging if the vehicle reports a high-voltage warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
