OBD-II fault code

P2E2B: Drive Motor A Excitation Current Too High

What it means

The drive motor A excitation current exceeds the calibrated maximum. Field excitation cannot be measured or controlled reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A's excitation circuit supplies field current, while a driver controls that current and the system monitors its level. P2E2B sets when the measured excitation current exceeds the calibrated maximum, which can be caused by a winding short or a faulty driver.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Excitation winding short
  2. Driver fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live excitation-current command and measured current to establish whether the excess occurs continuously or only under particular conditions.
  2. Check for related excitation-sensor, driver, or motor codes that could help distinguish a measurement problem from excessive actual current.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect excitation-circuit wiring and connectors for damage, heat, or signs of a short.
  4. Test the excitation winding and its circuit for a short, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification and using the required high-voltage safety procedure.
  5. If the winding and wiring pass, test the excitation-current driver and its control response according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged excitation-circuit wiring or a shorted connection.
  • Replace the excitation winding or motor assembly if testing confirms a winding short and the component is serviceable only as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Repair or replace the excitation-current driver if its output is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the vehicle has reduced torque, limp mode, or a shutdown warning; excessive field current can worsen electrical damage or cause loss of propulsion. Stop safely and arrange assistance if operation is unstable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
