OBD-II fault code

P2E29: Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Circuit Low Voltage

What it means

Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Circuit Low Voltage: the signal voltage is below the expected range. This affects electric-drive motor control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The drive motor A excitation-current sensor sends a voltage signal that the controller uses to estimate field current. P2E29 sets when that signal falls below its expected range, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live excitation-sensor voltage and measured current to confirm the low signal and the conditions when it occurs.
  2. Check for related excitation sensor or supply and ground codes that may point to a shared circuit fault.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the excitation sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or a wire contacting ground.
  4. Test the sensor signal wire for a short to ground and check the connector, supply, and ground for high-resistance contact using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test the excitation sensor output against the manufacturer's specification and replace it only if it remains too low.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose excitation-sensor terminals.
  • Repair a sense wire shorted to ground or damaged sensor wiring.
  • Replace the excitation-current sensor if it is internally shorted or its output fails specification.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid strenuous driving if motor power is reduced, since the vehicle may enter limp mode or lose propulsion. If the warning indicates shutdown or the vehicle's response becomes unpredictable, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
