OBD-II fault code

P2E2A: Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Circuit High Voltage

What it means

Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Circuit High Voltage: the signal voltage is above the expected range. This affects electric-drive motor control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The drive motor A excitation-current sensor sends a voltage signal that the controller uses to estimate field current. P2E2A sets when the signal rises above its expected range, which can result from a short to battery voltage, an open sensor, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live excitation-sensor voltage and measured current to confirm the high signal and when it occurs.
  2. Check for related excitation sensor or supply codes that may reveal a shared circuit issue.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the excitation sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or insulation damage that could expose the signal wire to battery voltage.
  4. Test the signal circuit for a short to B+ and check connector continuity and sensor supply and ground using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the wiring passes, test the excitation sensor for an open circuit and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose excitation-sensor terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ or other damaged wiring.
  • Replace an open or out-of-spec excitation-current sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if torque is reduced or limp mode is active; the controller may not be able to manage motor excitation reliably. If propulsion becomes unreliable or a shutdown warning appears, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
