OBD-II fault code

P2E28: Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Performance

What it means

Drive Motor A Excitation Current Sensor Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command. This affects electric-drive motor control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A's excitation-current sensor measures the current used to establish the motor's field, allowing the controller to match actual excitation to its command. P2E28 sets when the sensor circuit is electrically present but its response does not track that command within the expected performance range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live excitation-current command and measured current to see how the response differs when the code sets.
  2. Check for related drive motor A excitation or sensor codes that could indicate a shared supply, ground, or control problem.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the excitation sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Check sensor supply, ground, and signal connections for high resistance, then compare measured excitation current with the command under the manufacturer's specified test conditions.
  5. If connections and wiring pass, test the excitation sensor response against the manufacturer's specification for drift or an aged sensor element.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure high-resistance or corroded excitation-sensor connections.
  • Repair damaged sensor wiring or ground connections.
  • Replace the excitation-current sensor if its response remains outside the specified range.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if torque is reduced or limp mode is active, and avoid hard acceleration because excitation control may be unreliable. If the vehicle begins to lose propulsion or warns of shutdown, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
