OBD-II fault code

P2E11: Gear Selection Actuator Position Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the gear selection actuator position sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear selection actuator position sensor tells the control module where the shift actuator has moved, so the module can compare actual position with commanded gear changes. P2E11 sets when the signal is electrically present but its range or movement is implausible, which can result from sensor drift or displaced mounting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Delayed or failed gear changes
  • Transmission may stay in one gear or enter a limited-operation mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live actuator-position data with commanded gear changes to see when the readings diverge.
  2. Check whether the position reading changes smoothly and consistently as the actuator shifts, noting delays or missed movement.
  3. Inspect the sensor mounting and connector for displacement, looseness, corrosion, or damage that could alter the reading.
  4. Check the sensor wiring for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Compare sensor output and mounting position with the manufacturer's specification to identify drift, misalignment, or a circuit fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose connector or correct displaced sensor mounting where adjustment is provided.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals affecting the position signal.
  • Replace the actuator position sensor if its output has drifted or remains implausible with correct mounting and wiring.
  • Clear the code and verify the sensor reading follows actuator movement during gear changes.

Can I keep driving?

An implausible actuator position can cause delayed or failed shifts, a fixed gear, or limited-operation mode. Avoid driving if shifts are unpredictable or the transmission cannot select gears reliably; continued use can worsen loss of shifting control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
