OBD-II fault code

P2DF1: Intake Valve Lift Range/Performance Bank 2

What it means

The variable intake valve lift system reports range/performance fault on bank 2. Multiple cylinders or system-wide deviation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The variable intake valve lift system adjusts valve opening across cylinders on bank 2, while the control module checks that bank's commanded lift against position feedback. This bank-level range/performance code sets when the bank 2 system or multiple cylinders on that bank fail to track lift within tolerance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. System-wide mechanism wear
  2. Engine oil pressure low
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Rough idle or engine hesitation

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 lift commands and position feedback across cylinders to determine whether the deviation affects several cylinders.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition, because inadequate oil supply can affect multiple bank 2 lift actuators.
  3. Inspect bank 2 lift-system wiring, connectors, and shared electrical connections for damage, corrosion, or poor contact.
  4. Run the manufacturer's scan-tool lift command test on bank 2 and compare its cylinder responses, using bank 1 readings as a reference if available.
  5. If the fault spans bank 2 cylinders, test oil supply to that bank's actuators and inspect shared lift components and sensors according to service information.

Common fixes

  • Restore engine oil level and condition to the specified requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or loose shared connections serving the bank 2 lift system.
  • Replace a bank 2 position sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Repair or replace worn or binding bank 2 lift-system components when testing confirms a system-wide fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration because a bank 2 lift fault can cause rough running and reduced power across multiple cylinders. Stop if the check-engine light flashes or severe misfiring develops, as continued misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
