What it means
The variable intake valve lift system reports range/performance fault on bank 1. Multiple cylinders or system-wide deviation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The variable intake valve lift system changes valve opening across cylinders on bank 1, and the control module monitors lift commands and position feedback for that bank. This bank-level range/performance code sets when lift tracking is outside tolerance across multiple cylinders or the bank 1 system as a whole.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- System-wide mechanism wear
- Engine oil pressure low
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or acceleration
- Rough idle or engine hesitation
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 lift commands and position feedback across cylinders to see whether the error is widespread or isolated.
- Check engine oil level and condition, since low oil pressure or unsuitable oil can affect several bank 1 lift actuators at once.
- Inspect accessible bank 1 lift-system wiring, connectors, and shared electrical connections for damage, corrosion, or loose contact.
- Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command lift changes on bank 1 and compare feedback across its cylinders and with the other bank if available.
- If several bank 1 cylinders respond poorly, test oil supply to that bank's actuators and inspect its shared lift mechanism and sensors using service information.
Common fixes
- Correct engine oil level or condition to specification.
- Repair damaged or loose shared wiring and connections serving the bank 1 lift system.
- Replace a failed bank 1 position sensor after confirming it does not meet the manufacturer's test.
- Repair or replace worn or binding bank 1 lift-system components if the fault affects multiple cylinders.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving gentle and limited because a bank 1 system fault can reduce power and cause rough running across several cylinders. Stop if the check-engine light flashes or severe misfiring occurs to limit catalytic-converter damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
