What it means
The ECM detects that the installed particulate filter B does not match the expected type or specification. Wrong replacement part or substrate damage.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Particulate filter B is the filter the engine control module identifies as the second applicable particulate filter in the vehicle's system. The module sets P2DCD when the installed filter's detected type or condition does not match the expected specification, which can happen with an incorrect replacement or damaged or missing substrate.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wrong DPF type installed
- Substrate damaged or missing
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related DPF codes to see when the mismatch was detected and whether regeneration faults are also present.
- Confirm from the vehicle's service information which exhaust filter is designated filter B and check its identification against the required application.
- Inspect filter B and its surrounding exhaust connections for signs of damage, tampering, missing substrate, or leakage.
- Check the available filter condition and regeneration data with a scan tool, including whether a forced regeneration was attempted or failed.
- If the filter type and visible condition appear correct, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to verify the module's identification and monitoring inputs.
Common fixes
- Correct exhaust leaks or damaged connections at filter B.
- Replace an incorrect filter B with the specified type.
- Replace filter B if inspection confirms damaged or missing substrate.
- Complete regeneration only if the manufacturer's procedure confirms it is appropriate and the filter is serviceable.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid prolonged driving and heavy loads if power is reduced or a DPF warning is on; continued use can worsen filter restriction and may lead to limp mode. Do not repeatedly force regeneration when attempts are failing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
