What it means
The control pilot charging switch B reports a circuit/open condition. SAE J1772 charging signal handshake may be compromised.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Control pilot charging switch B is part of the vehicle's charging control circuit, which helps manage the charging signal handshake. P2DCE sets when the module detects an open electrical path in switch B's circuit, so it cannot reliably read or use that switch state.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in switch wire
- Switch failed
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and charging status information to determine whether the open circuit occurs continuously or only during a charging attempt.
- Inspect the switch B connector for an incomplete latch, a pushed-back pin, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Check the switch B circuit continuity and connector terminals against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specification.
- Test switch B's state and circuit response while operating the charging system according to the service procedure.
- If the switch and wiring test correctly, trace the circuit to the relevant charging controller and verify its input.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the switch B connector.
- Repair an open wire or pushed-back terminal in the switch B circuit.
- Replace a failed control pilot charging switch B.
- Repair the controller connection if testing identifies an open at that point.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may be drivable, but charging may fail to start or stop unexpectedly, so do not begin a trip that depends on recharging before confirming it works. Stop charging if the connector or charging equipment becomes unusually hot or shows visible damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
