What it means
The starter/generator rotor position sensors do not correlate with the calculated electrical angle within tolerance. Sensor offset or pole alignment off.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Position sensors report the starter/generator rotor's location so the control module can time electrical current to the motor's phases. P2DCC sets when the sensor-derived rotor position does not agree with the electrical angle the module calculates within its allowed tolerance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor mechanically offset
- Pole alignment off
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Reduced starter/generator assist or charging
- Rough or reduced engine starting assistance
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live position or electrical-angle readings to identify when the correlation fault appears, especially during cranking or assist.
- Inspect the starter/generator position-sensor connectors and wiring for looseness, damage, or contamination that could distort the readings.
- Check sensor power, ground, and signal circuits using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- Compare the position-sensor signals with the module's calculated electrical angle during the operating condition that triggers the fault.
- If the circuits test correctly, verify sensor mounting and rotor or pole alignment against the vehicle's service information.
Common fixes
- Reseat or repair a loose or damaged position-sensor connector.
- Repair damaged position-sensor wiring or ground connections.
- Correct a sensor mounting or alignment issue according to service information.
- Replace a failed position sensor or starter/generator assembly if testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum and avoid depending on starter/generator assist, since it may be reduced or lost. Rough starting or a hybrid-system warning warrants stopping safely and arranging service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
