What it means
The phase X, Y, and Z current sensors of the starter/generator do not correlate within the calibrated tolerance. Sum of phase currents should be near zero.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The starter/generator's X, Y, and Z phase current sensors measure current in its three electrical phases. The control module compares the readings, which should balance so their combined current is near zero; P2DCB sets when the phase readings disagree beyond the calibrated tolerance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- One sensor offset drifted
- Ground offset between sensors
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Reduced starter/generator assist or charging
- Rough or reduced engine starting assistance
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live X, Y, and Z phase-current readings under the conditions that set the code, noting whether one phase is offset from the others.
- Inspect the phase-current sensor connectors and harness for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or routing near sources of electrical interference.
- Check the sensor ground and reference connections for looseness or voltage offset using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- Compare each phase sensor's reading under the same operating conditions and check for a consistent offset on one sensor.
- If connections and grounds are sound, test the suspect sensor and starter/generator control circuitry to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair a loose or damaged phase-sensor connector.
- Repair a poor sensor ground or reference connection.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or terminals.
- Replace the phase-current sensor or starter/generator assembly if testing confirms sensor drift or failure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid relying on starter/generator assist; the system may reduce or stop charging and starting assistance. If a hybrid-system warning appears or the vehicle starts roughly, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
