What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger b coupler lock position sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The battery charger B coupler lock position sensor tells the control module where the coupler lock is. This range/performance code sets when the circuit signal is present but does not track the expected lock position correctly, which can happen if the sensor has drifted or moved out of alignment.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and charging history to determine whether the implausible position was reported during connection, locking, or charging.
- Inspect the charger B coupler lock for obstruction or damage and check whether it reaches its normal positions.
- Check that the position sensor is securely mounted and aligned with the lock mechanism.
- Compare scan-tool reported lock position with the actual position while operating the coupler as intended.
- If alignment and movement are sound, test sensor output and circuit condition against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove debris that prevents full coupler lock movement.
- Secure or correctly align a displaced sensor using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or connector terminals if found.
- Replace a sensor that has drifted outside its specified operating range.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be refused or interrupted if the reported lock position does not match the actual position. Make sure the coupler locks normally and avoid forcing it; stop using the charger if the lock indication is unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
