OBD-II fault code

P0D3B: Battery Charger A Input Current Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The signal from the battery charger A input current sensor is above the expected electrical range. The reading may be unreliable.

At a glance

  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery Charger A's input-current sensor reports current entering the charger to the control module. P0D3B sets when the sensor signal is above its expected electrical range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or an open sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check the live Battery Charger A input-current sensor signal to confirm it is high when the code sets.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and accessible wiring for a disconnected plug, an open conductor, corrosion, or damaged insulation.
  3. Check whether the sensor signal wire is shorted to battery voltage, and test sensor power, ground, and continuity against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare the sensor signal with available charger input-current data to check whether the high reading is inconsistent with charging activity.
  5. If the wiring and connections are sound, test for an open or failed input-current sensor using the approved procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose sensor plug.
  • Repair an open wire or a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Correct corroded terminals or other poor connections in the circuit.
  • Replace the sensor if testing confirms it is open or faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start, stop, or proceed slowly because the module receives an abnormally high input-current signal. Avoid depending on a complete charge, and stop safely if the vehicle also limits power or displays a high-voltage system warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
