OBD-II fault code

P2D74: Battery Charging System Negative Contactor D Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The negative contactor D of the battery charging system reports a control circuit range/performance condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Negative contactor D's control circuit lets the module operate the D switch in the high-voltage charging path. This code sets when the circuit's response is outside the expected range or does not track the command as expected, rather than simply registering as low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Coil resistance drifted
  2. High-resistance contact in connector
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV system warning
  • Charging may be limited or disabled
  • Vehicle may not enter Ready mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related codes to see whether the range or performance fault appears during charging, startup, or contactor operation.
  2. Use scan-tool data to compare the command for negative contactor D with its reported response and note whether the mismatch is repeatable.
  3. With the vehicle safely powered down under the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the D connector and accessible control wiring for corrosion, looseness, or damage that could add resistance.
  4. Have a qualified technician measure the D control circuit and coil against the manufacturer's specification using the required high-voltage isolation procedure.
  5. If the circuit and coil measurements are within specification, check contactor movement and the module's control output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a high-resistance or corroded contactor D connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the negative contactor D control circuit.
  • Replace negative contactor D if its coil or operation falls outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Update or repair the controlling module only if its output is identified as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid depending on the vehicle for a trip if charging is limited or Ready mode is unreliable. Continued operation may leave the vehicle unable to charge or start when needed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
