OBD-II fault code

P2D66: Battery Charging System Negative Contactor C Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The negative contactor C of the battery charging system reports a control circuit range/performance condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Negative contactor C is a high-voltage switching device in the battery charging path. The control module monitors its command and circuit feedback, setting this code when the response is outside the expected range or does not match the command. A drifting contactor coil or resistance at its connector can cause that mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Coil resistance drifted
  2. High-resistance contact in connector
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV system warning
  • Charging may be limited or disabled
  • Vehicle may not enter Ready mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related hybrid or EV codes first, then check live contactor C command and feedback to see when they disagree.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect negative contactor C's low-voltage connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check connector fit and terminal condition for resistance or intermittent contact, following the manufacturer's high-voltage safety and isolation procedures.
  4. Have a qualified technician measure contactor C coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and coil readings are within specification, use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to assess contactor feedback and control-module operation.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or damaged contactor C connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged wiring to negative contactor C.
  • Replace negative contactor C if its coil or feedback response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair the control module or driver only if testing confirms it is not controlling or reading contactor C correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the vehicle for routine travel or attempting repeated charging if charging is limited or Ready mode is unavailable. The high-voltage path may stop working, leaving the vehicle unable to start or charge.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
