OBD-II fault code

P2D72: Battery Charging System Negative Contactor D Stuck Open

What it means

The negative contactor D of the battery charging system reports a stuck open condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Negative contactor D closes a section of the high-voltage battery charging path when commanded. This code sets when the control module detects that D remains open despite a close command, preventing reliable completion of that path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contactor contacts oxidised
  2. Contactor coil burned out
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or EV system warning
  • Charging may be disabled
  • Vehicle may not start or enter Ready mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related codes to identify whether the failure occurred during charging, startup, or another contactor command.
  2. Compare the commanded and reported states of negative contactor D in scan-tool data when the module requests it to close.
  3. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the D contactor connector and accessible wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician isolate the high-voltage system and test the D contactor coil and switching response to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the contactor passes, test its control circuit and module output for an interruption or inadequate command.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair a corroded, loose, or damaged contactor D connector or wire.
  • Replace negative contactor D if its coil is open or its contacts fail to close in testing.
  • Repair the control circuit if it cannot deliver the commanded operation.
  • Clear the code and verify D closes during the required charging or startup check.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the vehicle if it cannot charge or enter Ready mode, and do not attempt repeated charging if the warning persists. The vehicle may become unavailable once its usable battery charge is depleted.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
