What it means
The negative contactor D of the battery charging system reports a control circuit/open condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Negative contactor D is operated through a control circuit that energises its coil. This code sets when the control module detects an open or interrupted D control path, such as a broken wire, disconnected terminal, or open coil, so the high-voltage charging path may not be commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in coil control wire
- Open contactor coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning
- Charging may be disabled
- Vehicle may not start or enter Ready mode
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and related codes to establish when the D control circuit interruption was detected and whether other contactors are affected.
- Check scan-tool data for the command and status of negative contactor D to confirm the fault occurs when it is requested to operate.
- With the vehicle safely powered down per the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the D control-wire route and connector for breaks, loose terminals, or a pushed-back pin.
- Have a qualified technician test continuity through the D control wiring and connector, following the required high-voltage isolation procedure.
- Test the contactor D coil to the manufacturer's specification; if wiring and coil pass, check the module's control output.
Common fixes
- Seat a pushed-back or loose terminal in the contactor D connector and secure the connector.
- Repair an open or damaged negative contactor D control wire.
- Replace negative contactor D if its coil is open.
- Repair the control-module output only if testing confirms it is not providing the required command.
Can I keep driving?
Limit use if the vehicle has a hybrid or EV warning, cannot charge, or will not enter Ready mode. It may become unable to start or charge, so avoid trips that depend on reliable charging.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
