OBD-II fault code

P0D11: Battery Charging System Negative Contactor A Control Circuit/Open

What it means

An open or other circuit fault is detected in the control circuit for negative contactor A of the battery charging system. The fault may prevent reliable contactor control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Negative contactor A is a high-voltage switch, and its control circuit carries the module's command to operate it. P0D11 sets when that circuit is open or otherwise unable to provide a reliable control path, such as a broken coil wire, an open coil, or a terminal that has backed out.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in coil control wire
  2. Open coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Charging system warning light may come on
  • Charging may not start or may stop unexpectedly
  • Reduced electric driving range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related codes to identify whether the control-circuit fault coincides with a charge or ready-state request.
  2. Inspect the negative contactor A connector for a pushed-back pin, loose lock, corrosion, or a broken wire near the plug.
  3. Check continuity of the coil control wires and connector terminals, following the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
  4. Test the contactor coil for an open circuit according to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and coil are intact, compare module command with circuit response to check for a control-module output fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the negative contactor A control circuit.
  • Refit or replace a pushed-back, loose, or corroded connector terminal.
  • Replace negative contactor A if its coil is open.
  • Repair a failed module driver only after confirming the wiring and coil are sound.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may not start or may stop, reducing available electric range. If the vehicle warns that high-voltage operation is limited or will not enter ready mode, avoid driving it until the fault is assessed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
