OBD-II fault code

P2D20: Reductant System Flow – Blocked

What it means

The SCR module detects fully blocked flow in the reductant system. No reductant reaches the injector despite commanded dosing.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The SCR system injects liquid reductant, usually DEF or AdBlue, into the exhaust so the catalyst can reduce NOx emissions. The SCR module compares commanded dosing with evidence of flow and sets P2D20 when it detects a complete blockage and no reductant reaches the injector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Reductant injector clogged
  2. Frozen reductant in cold weather

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to review freeze-frame data and SCR dosing commands, confirming the fault occurred when dosing was requested.
  2. Check the DEF level and warnings, then inspect the tank, lines, and injector area for leaks, damage, or signs of crystallized fluid.
  3. If the fault occurred in freezing conditions, allow the system to thaw and check whether flow returns after the vehicle warms.
  4. With the system safe to test, inspect the reductant injector for deposits or blockage and check its connector and wiring.
  5. Have reductant flow tested using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a blocked injector from a restriction elsewhere in the supply system.

Common fixes

  • Thaw frozen DEF and confirm the system resumes dosing.
  • Clean or replace a reductant injector blocked by deposits.
  • Repair a damaged or restricted reductant line.
  • Clear the code and verify that commanded dosing produces flow.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive a short distance if the vehicle runs normally, but avoid prolonged use because NOx emissions will rise and the vehicle may impose a no-start countdown. Address the warning promptly, especially if a countdown is displayed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
