OBD-II fault code

P2D1E: Reductant System Leak Detected – Large Leak

What it means

The SCR module detects a large leak in the reductant system. Pressure cannot be maintained for dosing operations.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reductant system supplies DEF or AdBlue to the SCR injector to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The SCR module monitors whether the system can build and hold dosing pressure; this code sets when pressure cannot be maintained in a way consistent with a large leak, such as a split or disconnected line or failed tank seal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Reductant supply line disconnected or split
  2. Tank seal failed

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for reductant pressure, SCR warnings, and any no-start countdown before clearing codes.
  2. Safely inspect accessible reductant lines and connections for a split, disconnection, active leak, or substantial crystal deposits.
  3. Check the tank and its accessible seals for visible wetness or DEF residue, taking care around hot or pressurized components.
  4. Use the manufacturer's pressure and leak test to confirm the leak location and distinguish a failed line from a tank or seal fault.
  5. After repair, verify that the system builds and holds pressure as specified and that the SCR warning status updates.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a detached reductant supply line if its fittings are intact.
  • Replace a split or damaged reductant supply line.
  • Replace a failed tank seal if testing confirms the leak is there.
  • Repair or replace another leaking component identified by the manufacturer's pressure test.

Can I keep driving?

A large leak needs prompt attention; avoid continued use if reductant is actively escaping or the vehicle shows a severe warning. DEF loss can disable dosing, raise emissions, and trigger a no-start countdown on some vehicles.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
