What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the turbocharger interstage pressure sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The turbocharger interstage pressure sensor A measures pressure between stages of a multi-stage turbocharging system, and the ECM uses its signal to manage boost. P2D21 sets when the ECM detects an electrical circuit fault that makes Sensor A's reading unreliable; the code does not by itself identify a low or high signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A's live pressure reading with other pressure readings and engine conditions to see when the fault appears.
- Locate turbocharger interstage pressure Sensor A and inspect its connector, harness routing, and sensor body for looseness, heat damage, oil contamination, or chafing.
- Check that the connector is fully seated and its terminals are clean, secure, and free of corrosion.
- Using the wiring diagram, test Sensor A's supply, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring checks pass, test Sensor A and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Reconnect Sensor A's loose electrical connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals in the Sensor A circuit.
- Replace a failed turbocharger interstage pressure Sensor A.
- Clear the code and confirm the reading responds normally during a road test.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing, or long trips if power is reduced, since the ECM may limit boost and the engine may produce smoke. Stop if power loss is severe or unusual intake noise increases, and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
