What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the turbocharger interstage pressure sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Turbocharger interstage pressure Sensor A measures pressure between turbocharger stages, helping the ECM control boost. P2D22 sets when the signal is electrically plausible but falls outside the expected range or fails to respond consistently with operating conditions, rather than showing a simple circuit-low or circuit-high fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A's live reading with engine speed, load, and other pressure readings to identify when it diverges.
- Inspect Sensor A's mounting and pressure port for displacement, looseness, blockage, or a poor seal that could distort the measurement.
- Check the Sensor A connector and wiring for damage, moisture, corrosion, or intermittent contact.
- Compare Sensor A's output with the manufacturer's specification across the relevant operating conditions, checking whether it changes smoothly.
- If the mounting and circuit are sound, test Sensor A for calibration drift and replace it only if it fails the manufacturer's checks.
Common fixes
- Secure Sensor A correctly and restore a sound seal at its mounting.
- Clean an obstructed pressure port if the manufacturer's procedure permits it.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring in the Sensor A circuit.
- Replace Sensor A if its output remains out of range despite correct mounting and wiring.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle has reduced power, avoid heavy loads and hard acceleration because boost control may be limited or inaccurate. Prompt diagnosis can prevent continued poor performance and excess exhaust smoke.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
