What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Boost sensor D reports pressure in the turbocharger or supercharger system to the engine control module. This code sets when the circuit appears electrically usable but the sensor D reading falls outside the expected range or does not respond as the module expects.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Reduced engine power may occur
- Boost control may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan related boost codes, then note engine load and boost readings when the fault was recorded.
- Compare live data from boost sensor D with other available pressure readings at key-on and while the engine runs under safe, controlled conditions.
- Inspect sensor D's mounting, connector, and nearby pressure passage for displacement, poor seating, damage, or blockage.
- Check the sensor D wiring for chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or intermittent connections that could distort the reading.
- Test sensor D output and its circuit response across the specified operating conditions using the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish sensor drift from a wiring or mounting issue.
Common fixes
- Re-seat boost sensor D correctly and clear any obstruction in its pressure passage if the service procedure permits.
- Repair a poor connection or damaged wire in the sensor D circuit.
- Replace boost sensor D if its output remains outside the manufacturer's specification after mounting and wiring checks.
Can I keep driving?
Boost control may be limited and engine power reduced; avoid towing and hard acceleration until the cause is found. If the vehicle enters limp mode, drive only as needed to reach a safe place.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
