OBD-II fault code

P2CD9: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor D Circuit High

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit high fault on the turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Boost sensor D sends a pressure signal to the engine control module for turbocharger or supercharger control. This code sets when the sensor D circuit voltage is higher than the module's calibrated range, which can result from a signal short to battery voltage, an open sensor, or a poor corroded connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Reduced engine power may occur
  • Boost control may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan related sensor codes, noting whether other faults point to a shared supply or wiring issue.
  2. Inspect boost sensor D's connector for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or loose terminals, and examine the harness for a signal wire contacting a powered wire.
  3. Read sensor D live data with the engine off and compare it with other pressure readings to see whether the signal is implausibly high.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, test the sensor D signal circuit for an open or short to battery voltage and check power and ground according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test boost sensor D for an internal open or failure using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged terminals at the boost sensor D connector.
  • Repair an open signal wire or a short to battery voltage in the sensor D circuit.
  • Replace boost sensor D if it is internally open or otherwise fails testing and its circuit is sound.

Can I keep driving?

Boost control may be limited and engine power reduced, so avoid towing, hard acceleration, and risky overtaking. If the vehicle loses substantial power or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
