OBD-II fault code

P2B96: Injection Pulse Performance

What it means

The ECM detects that the overall injection pulse performance does not match the calibrated values. Combustion result deviates from expected fuelling behaviour.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The ECM controls injector pulse operation to deliver the fuel needed for stable combustion across engine conditions. P2B96 sets when overall injection-pulse performance differs from calibrated behavior, which can occur if injector flow has drifted between cylinders or rail pressure changes during injection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injectors aged - flow drift across cylinders
  2. Fuel rail pressure drifts during pulse

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or uneven running
  • Hesitation or reduced power
  • Increased fuel consumption or exhaust smoke

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan for related fuel-pressure, injector, and misfire codes to identify the conditions when injection performance deviates.
  2. Use live data to compare commanded and measured fuel-rail pressure while the engine idles and during the conditions recorded in the freeze frame.
  3. Inspect injector connectors and wiring for damage, looseness, or poor contact, and check for fuel leaks.
  4. Compare cylinder balance or injector contribution data, if supported, to identify a cylinder with uneven fuel delivery.
  5. Test injector flow and rail-pressure behavior against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose injector wiring and connector terminals.
  • Repair the fuel-rail pressure fault if pressure drifts during injection.
  • Service or replace injectors that fail flow or balance testing.

Can I keep driving?

With rough running, hesitation, or reduced power, avoid hard acceleration and towing until the cause is found. Ongoing uneven fuelling can increase fuel consumption and emissions, and severe misfiring or heavy smoke warrants stopping the drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
