OBD-II fault code

P2B97: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Position Exceeded Learning Limit

What it means

The required adaptation offset for the exhaust pressure control valve A position exceeds the calibrated learning window. Mechanical wear or sensor drift beyond compensation.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Exhaust pressure control valve A regulates exhaust flow or pressure as commanded by the engine control system, and its position feedback lets the ECM adapt control to the valve's actual position. P2B97 sets when the correction required to bring valve A's position into its learned range exceeds the calibrated limit, often because the mechanism's end-stops have worn or the position reference has drifted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve mechanism worn at end-stops
  2. Position sensor reference drifted

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Poor acceleration or altered exhaust behavior

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan live valve A commanded and reported positions alongside available exhaust-pressure data to see whether the valve follows commands.
  2. Inspect exhaust pressure control valve A, its linkage, connector, and surrounding harness for wear, looseness, damage, or signs of binding.
  3. Check that the valve mechanism moves through its intended range using the manufacturer's service procedure; do not force a hot exhaust component.
  4. Check valve A position-sensor wiring and connector terminals for damage or poor contact.
  5. Compare valve travel and position feedback with the manufacturer's specification, then perform any specified learning procedure after correcting the fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a binding or loose valve A linkage according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact at valve A.
  • Replace worn valve mechanism or end-stop components as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace the valve A position sensor if its reference has drifted beyond specification, then perform the specified learning procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power or poor acceleration can make driving in traffic hazardous; avoid hard acceleration, high speeds, and towing. Arrange prompt diagnosis because incorrect exhaust-pressure control can affect engine operation and may keep the vehicle in reduced-power mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
