OBD-II fault code

P2B98: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Supply Low

What it means

The supply voltage to the exhaust pressure control valve A actuator is below the expected window. Fuse blown, supply wire shorted, or upstream regulator fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Exhaust pressure control valve A uses an electrical actuator supply so the control system can move the valve and manage exhaust pressure. P2B98 sets when the supply voltage available to that actuator is below the expected range, which can result from a blown fuse or a supply wire shorted to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply fuse blown
  2. Supply wire shorted to ground

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Poor acceleration or altered exhaust behavior

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan for related actuator-supply or charging-system codes to check whether the low supply is isolated to valve A.
  2. Inspect the valve A actuator connector and supply harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or contact with ground.
  3. Check the relevant fuse and its terminals for an open fuse or poor contact, using the vehicle wiring diagram to identify the correct circuit.
  4. Measure supply at the valve A connector under the conditions specified by the manufacturer and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If supply remains low, trace the circuit for a short to ground or an upstream supply fault before replacing the actuator.

Common fixes

  • Replace a blown fuse only after checking for the cause of the overload.
  • Repair a valve A supply wire shorted to ground or damaged by chafing.
  • Clean or repair corroded fuse or actuator connector terminals.
  • Repair an upstream supply fault if the wiring and fuse are sound.

Can I keep driving?

Because this fault can trigger reduced power and poor acceleration, avoid hard acceleration, high speeds, and towing. Have the supply fault checked promptly; the valve may not respond as intended, affecting exhaust-pressure control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
