OBD-II fault code

P2B94: Wastegate Position Sensor B Exceeded Learning Limit

What it means

The required adaptation offset for the wastegate position sensor B exceeds the calibrated learning window. Sensor or mechanism out of nominal range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate position sensor B reports the position of the wastegate mechanism for ECM boost control and adaptation. P2B94 sets when the correction needed to bring sensor B's position into its learned range exceeds the permitted limit, pointing to a shifted mechanism end-stop or sensor-reference drift.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical wear shifted end-stops
  2. Sensor reference drifted

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Weak acceleration or slower turbo response

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live wastegate B position with its commanded position and available boost data to identify a mismatch.
  2. Inspect sensor B, its connector, linkage, and the wastegate mechanism for looseness, damage, binding, or wear at the end-stops.
  3. With the engine off and following the vehicle's safety procedures, check that the wastegate mechanism moves freely through its intended range.
  4. Check sensor B's wiring and connector terminals for damage or poor contact that could affect its position reference.
  5. Compare sensor B readings and mechanism travel with the manufacturer's specification, then perform any specified learning procedure after repairs.

Common fixes

  • Repair or free a binding wastegate mechanism according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair loose or damaged sensor B wiring and connector terminals.
  • Replace worn wastegate mechanism or end-stop components as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace wastegate position sensor B if its reference has drifted beyond specification, then carry out the specified learning procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power or slow turbo response can make merging and overtaking unsafe; avoid hard acceleration, high speeds, and towing. Arrange prompt diagnosis because incorrect wastegate control can worsen boost problems and may keep the vehicle in reduced-power mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
